An epiphany is a revealing, an awareness, a moment of knowing. So the season of Epiphany is focused on knowing more about Christ’s revealing of Himself and His mission as recorded in the Gospels, and also as expressed in our own congregation’s missional life here in Hollywood. This is a season for new life, symbolized by the green cross above.

Epiphany lasts for nine weeks. Here are the gospel texts for the first four weeks of Epiphany.

  • Epiphany 1
    Baptism of Christ, Matthew 3:13-17
    January 6, 2011
  • Epiphany 2
    John 1:29-42
    January 13, 2011
  • Epiphany 3
    Matthew 4:12-23

    January 22, 2011
  • Epiphany 4
    Matthew 5:1-12

Great Disappointment Day

Originaly Posted on October 8, 2010

featured-2010-gdd

In the events leading up to and including October 22, 1844 our Adventist forefathers left us with an important heritage. Instead of a beginning of being ‘right’ about our religion, we began with utter failure and humiliation. Out of this failure and what was indeed a Great Disappointment – hope was born and a movement began.

This year on October 22, 2010 we look to live into the legacy of theological innovation that was required when the experience of early Adventists could no longer sustain what they believed. We hope to capture the adventurous spirit of a group of pioneers seeking to find Truth and willing to follow it wherever it leads. We want to celebrate the value that faith requires, risk even in the face of uncertainty. Most of all, we desire to remember that the fruit of failure can be humility and an openness to see where God is leading.

Please join us in this monumental occasion. For more information please contact Nathan French (buckeyenathan@gmail.com) or Rajeev Sigamoney (rsigamoney@yahoo.com).

Hollywood Adventist Church featured on Sojourners

Originaly Posted on August 12, 2010

sojourners2010

Sojourners, the organization and blog dedicated to faith, politics, and culture, recently published an article about the power of community organizing. Our own congregation’s missional journey and long-time partnership with local community organizing non-profit, LA Voice/PICO, is featured in this article via an interview with senior pastor Ryan Bell.

When Ryan Bell took over as pastor of Hollywood Adventist Church in California, it was a withering congregation with only about 50 active members. And, he says, “We had a homeless ministry we couldn’t afford and a debt that was about to kill the church.” Bell reluctantly closed the feeding program for the homeless but resolved to find a more practical way to address the issue.
