End It Now! Adventists say “No!” to violence against women

End It Now! Adventists say

The Hollywood Adventist Church stands with enditnow and women worldwide to say “No!” to violence against women. You can join us in this stand by signing at petition online or at our Sabbath morning worships.

enditnow is a global campaign to raise awareness and advocate for the end of violence against women and girls around the world.

This campaign, which extends to more than 200 countries and territories, was launched in October 2009 in partnership between the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA)—a prominent humanitarian organization—and the Department of Women’s Ministries of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, two entities that are representative of the Adventist Church.

enditnow is the most important stand the Seventh-day Adventist Church has ever taken regarding violence against women and girls. Through this campaign, more than 15 million Adventist church members—men, women, and children— are expected to create a global movement that will be mobilized within their own communities, where each person will actively work to create awareness and share solutions on ways to end this global problem.

Seventh-day Adventists affirm the dignity and worth of each human being and decry all forms of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. is a call to action for all Adventists and supporters to stand up and put into practice those principles we hold true.

enditnow supports the existing programs currently being implemented around the world through ADRA and the Department of Women’s Ministries to end violence against women. These programs provide tangible examples of the work that is already being done to resolve this issue.

Although enditnow seeks to primarily mobilize Adventist church members, all individuals, church congregations of every faith, social groups, schools, and businesses are invited to join. Information about joining is available at www.enditnow.org.

Stained Glass: Hollywood Blvd screens at AFI

Stained Glass: Hollywood Blvd

Please join our Hollywood Adventist Church community as we celebrate the release of Stained Glass: Hollywood Blvd., a documentary by filmmaker Melody George. This documentary is a unique behind-the-scenes look at the missional development of the Hollywood Adventist Church. Many of our local denominational Conference leadership will be present. You don’t want to miss this exciting evening!

From the press release:

There are 6,000 Adventist Churches in North America–Each one has a story. STAINED GLASS is an unprecedented documentary series commissioned by the Church Resource Center (Vervent) of the North American Division. The documentaries show the pulse of a church through all the joy and heartache that congregational leadership demands. It speaks to church life as it fades away from its traditional position in society. Uniquely addressing the question; “How do congregations redefine their role in the 21st century?” This riveting film series goes where the camera has rarely been allowed: behind the scenes of three churches on the West Coast trying desperately to keep their relevance alive.

STAINED GLASS : Hollywood Blvd by award-winning filmmakers Melody George and Paul Kim is the first in the series of three to premiere. This part of the series follows the Hollywood church as it is confronted with a dwindling congregation that has reflected the recent troubles of their city. With only a handful of disconnected people straggling in for worship service, an idealistic new pastor and a gifted musician decide to take action. Under their guidance, a group of young professionals commit to wrestling with the pivotal question, “How can we be a people among whom God dwells?”

10 Commandments of Christian Finance - DELAYED

Originaly Posted on August 14, 2009

As part of Stewardship Month, Hollywood Adventist Church is providing a free finance seminar on Sabbath afternoon, August 22. Jennifer Newton will be presenting “The 10 Commandments of Christian Finance.” Topics will include cash versus credit, how to save on a small income, and others. A Question & Answer time will follow, so bring your budgeting questions if desired. Snacks will be served at 1:30 p.m., and the seminar will begin at 2:00 p.m. All are welcome, so bring a friend!

“10 Commandments of Budgeting” Class Postponed
We are very sad to report that Tony Arias, the Associate Pastor of the Mountain View Church in Las Vegas, NV was struck by a car and killed while riding his bike. Pastor Newton was the President of the Nevada-Utah Conference and so the whole Newton family is really feeling this loss personally.

Brad and Jennifer Newton are on their way to Las Vegas to be with Tony’s family and the Mountain View Church family and consequently Jennifer will be unable to teach the budgeting class that was scheduled for this Sabbath afternoon at 2:00 pm.

We will announce a new date for the class as soon as we can. In the meantime please keep the Arias family, the Mountain View church and the Newtons in your prayers.

Thank you!

Praying the Psalms

Originaly Posted on July 24, 2009

Our Bible study on the Epistle to the Colossians has wrapped up. It was a great journey. Thanks to those of you who joined us week by week. Now we are beginning a new series entitled, “Praying the Psalms,” which will be led by Scott Arany.

This will be a great balance to the somewhat more theologically dense writing of Paul. This gathering will present the opportunity to actually pray the Psalms, not only individually, but also together as a group or in small groups.

“Praying the Psalms” will start this coming Monday, July 27 at 7:30 p.m., in our usual spot in the Community Chapel. This will run for approximately 5–6 Mondays.

Purple People: Laurie Miller

Originaly Posted on April 13, 2009

By Kirsten Salvador.

A few years ago, we met Laurie Miller.
we had no idea how well we’d get to know her.
we had no idea that she would dwell with us.
worship with us.
study the Bible with us.
laugh and cry and live with us.

YEP! IN 2007 Mireya Pena, employed at the Arthritis Foundation, simply asked us, her new friends at Hollywood Adventist, to form a team for the Arthritis Walk that year. We shook hands with Laurie. Said hello. Exchanged names.

And now, here we are, two years later, our third year participating in the Arthritis Walk. We know more about it, thanks to Mireya. We know it touches everyone. Not just the old and frail, but the young and vibrant. Like Laurie.

Slowly … it’s gotten more personal for us here at Hollywood. First, Bill’s mom. Then, we learned about Kori, another new member of ours in 2007, currently away studying in Maryland. And now, Laurie, that girl we shook hands with a few years ago. She stepped into Hollywood one day, to see what this place was where her friend Mireya worshipped, and has shown up more and more and more ….

This year we know her much better. She’s here …. a LOT. And THIS YEAR she’s our Team Honoree.

JOIN US …. for more relationship building while we also do something really necessary … raising funds to find a cure for Arthritis.

Click here to join Pr. Ryan, Mireya, Nathan, Christina, Ninette and Karen today and walk with us on JUNE 7 in SANTA MONICA!
