All Are Welcome Here

Originaly Posted on May 9, 2014

All Are Welcome

At Hollywood Adventist Church, “Where God’s Spirit is given space to change lives,” we are committed to the ongoing work of making that space fully inclusive.

God’s love is broader and deeper than we can fathom. Fellowship and membership in His church should, likewise, be open and generous. The redemptive power of Christ’s love extends to everyone regardless of age, race, class, sexual or gender identity. All are welcome in our church.

We embrace the challenge of being a diverse community, which encourages dialogue and welcomes questions, as we continue to identify the ways God is at work in all of our lives. We believe this will ultimately enrich us and be a witness for and a foretaste of the kingdom God intends to establish in the earth made new.

Question of the Week!

Originaly Posted on February 14, 2014

QUESTION OF THE WEEK – We all have questions about God and religion. Yet as each of us grows in our spiritual journey, we see things from different perspectives. As a way to encourage dialogue, we’re going to post a new question each week from members of our congregation. Perhaps you’ll see something that you’ve been wondering as well; perhaps you’ve struggled with one of these questions and found some answers that seem to make sense. This is not a forum for providing pat answers or critical discussion, but rather a chance for us to share insights and suggestions of things we might have found helpful in our own wrestlings with these questions.

Do you have a question that you’d like to submit for discussion? Email it to us at info@hollywoodsda.org with the subject line “Question of the Week.”

Question of the Week, February 8-15
https://www.facebook.com/adventhollywood/posts/10151856043480667

What is my plan? What is God’s plan for my life? Does my plan matter if I’ve surrendered “all” to God?

Question of the Week, February 16-22

What does God look like? What did Jesus look like?

Be sure to join us Sabbath, December 14, for a special Christmas presentation titled “O Come Emmanuel”. Our children will join us in worship as we look back at Christ’s first advent. Then we will look forward to his second, future advent in poetic reflections on the hymn, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”.

Community Garden

Originaly Posted on December 10, 2013

As committed member of our local community, the Hollywood Adventist Church encourages our neighbors to grow nutritious and healthy food. To support this commitment, we operate a community garden on our church property.

Instead of growing all the food ourselves, we’ve opened the garden to be truly a community garden. For a small fee community members are able to rent a garden plot to grow fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers.

This last summer the garden yielded a bountiful harvest and hosted many events. This coming season we plan to again rent out plots to members of the community. Stay tuned for info on how to get your own garden plot.

The Underground

Originaly Posted on December 9, 2013

The Underground Room

If you are young at heart and want to experience God in an authentic fresh way, you are invited to join us at Club Underground on Friday nights (doors open at 8pm). Club Underground is a worship encounter hosted by our young adults with a lounge club vibe. We start the evening off with a light meal or refreshments and time to interact. We end our evening with a devotional thought and discussion. Our encounters are hosted by different young adults each week so our devotionals take many different forms as each of the individual use their God given creativity to guide guests into a fresh experience with our Lord and Savior.

Free parking is available in the church lot. The club entrance is located on Hollywood Blvd. After parking use the side walk to walk around to the Hollywood boulevard side of the building.

Bathroom Renovations

Originaly Posted on July 8, 2013

We’re excited to renovate our church home over the next month. You’ll see some minor changes to our sanctuary and major changes to our restrooms! During the construction process, the downstairs restrooms will be closed but the outdoor restrooms are open (near the Fellowship Hall). Our new tenant, Ecclesia, is sharing the cost with us, but we still need to commit our own funds to this long-overdue project. If you can contribute to the remodeling, please note your donation on the Building Improvement line of your tithe envelope.

Here are some photos of Before and In Progress for the men’s bathroom:

Originaly Posted on January 8, 2013

Seventh-Gay Adventists: a film about faith on the margins

Join us on Saturday evening, February 16 from 7–10 p.m. for a screening of the new film, Seventh-Gay Adventists: a film about faith on the margins. The filmmakers, Daneen Akers and Stephen Eyer will be on hand to answer questions in a discussion moderated by Pastor Ryan Bell.

This film follows the stories of three gay and lesbian Adventists as they struggle to be true to themselves and their faith. The film is set in the context of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the fastest growing denomination in the United States, but the film’s themes of belonging, identity, and wrestling to know who you are and how you relate to your faith has been resonating with viewers around the country who can’t tell their Adventists from their Mormons. This intersection of faith and sexuality is at the core of many conversations political, religious, and family conversations today, and this film offers viewers the opportunity to experience the spiritual journey of a gay person of faith.

The Strength to Love Reading Group

Originaly Posted on December 27, 2012

Pastor Ryan will be leading a group through the book, Strength to Love, by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Join the Facebook Group at www.facebook.com/groups/452799664780154/ where some of the conversation will be held. If you’re not on Facebook, email Pastor Ryan to let him know you want to be a part of the group. We will meet in person later in January when we’ve had a chance to read the book.

About the book: In these short meditative and sermonic pieces, some of them composed in jails and all of them crafted during the tumultuous years of the Civil Rights struggle, Dr. King articulated and espoused in a deeply personal and compelling way his commitment to justice and to the intellectual, moral and spiritual conversion that makes his work as much a blueprint for Christian discipleship today as it was then.

You can buy your own copy of Strength to Love online at Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Strength-Love-Martin-Luther-King/dp/0800697405/
