There’s a rhythm to our lives. We spend five (or more) days at work looking forward to the weekend. Some of us work in the light and some of us work at night. Some of us even work all weekend long. Time is something that shapes and structures all of our existence. At the Hollywood Adventist Church we’re seeking to embrace a sacramental approach to time. As a result, we “do” time a little differently here. God’s Spirit is given space in our time to bring us into his rest, fellowship, and rhythm.
Daily
Christ remains with us every day, and not just on the weekends. As we go to work every morning (or evening) we go as God’s people sent on God’s mission. Even in our most ordinary days are made holy by the Spirit’s presence.
Weekly
Every week we meet as a congregation for our worship on Saturday mornings. This is because we see Saturday as a sabbath space in our busy weeks. The Sabbath is a time for rest, recreation, and restoration for ourselves, our community, and ultimately the whole creation. This is a day where we choose to experience the rest that Christ offers us when he says, “Come unto me, all of you who are weary, and I will give you rest.” In Christ, we join with the Creator and say, “This is very good!”
Monthly
There are three rhythms we observe once every month, and they all seem to involve eating: Communion, Potluck, and Vespers. On the first Sabbath of the month we have potluck; we all contribute food to a common meal after worship. Twice a month we have Fire Place Vespers. On the last Sabbath of every month we celebrate Holy Communion during the morning’s worship.
Yearly
Following the seasons in Southern California can be a difficult task at times. Spring and Winter run together, Fire season slips in between Summer and Fall, and the weather is virtually the same year-round. Still, there are seasons and we catch a glimpse of rhythm throughout the year. Likewise, there is a rhythm to the church year. We celebrate the seasons of the church year at Hollywood: Advent, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. Our music, study, and preaching is informed by the unique themes and experiences of each season. From Advent until the Day of Pentecost we preach from the lectionary, and during Pentecost/Ordinary Time our services are more thematic and topical. Read more about the church year at Hollywood.
